Contact binaries of the type W UMa are observed to exhibit period changes of the order 0.000001 d during rather short time intervals. This paper examines the conditions under which such orbital changes may be produced during periastron passages of a third body moving in an orbit of high eccentricity around the contact binary. Restrictions on the third body mass due to orbital stability requirements and lack of direct observations make it unlikely that period jumps with the absolute value of delta-P/delta exceeding 0.000001 are produced directly by the dynamical action of a third body during its close passage if the W UMa lifetime is not less than 50 million years. It is suggested that such period jumps may result as secondary effects from close passages which directly produce smaller period jumps, which in turn produce, or trigger, mass transfer or ejection events.
