UV properties of Am stars are investigated on the basis of S2/68 UV fluxes and compared with the behavior of a selection of standard stars and with the theoretical data derived from Kurucz models. Using Stromgren photometry as reference system and its standard star list, the analysis of several UV colors demonstrates their sensitivity to temperature, luminosity, and metallicity. The peculiar behavior of Am stars is examined and only partly explained by the available models, by which standard stars are very well accounted for. A very metallicity sensitive UV index independent of luminosity has been introduced. The important fact that Am behavior in the colors diagrams cannot be confused with a luminosity effect is brought out and is well reproduced by the computed colors. Several stars appear to have unexpected UV peculiarities and are the best candidates for further higher resolution study.
