The discordance between the predicted and observed maxima and minima of stellar luminosity is discussed. A sample of light curves observed for 30yr shows how they deviate from the mean curves. About 1200 HIPPARCOS stars present a large amplitude of variability and their luminosity can be lower than the threshold of the satellite detection during a part of their period. These problems limit the capacities of observation according to the types of variability.
