Results of calculations of the appearance of the Balmer-line profiles in stratified model atmospheres of white dwarf stars are presented. In general, it is found that where the hydrogen layer is relatively thin, the hydrogen lines are much narrower than those found in homogeneous, hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. If the composition discontinuity occurs at monochromatic optical depths which are large compared to unity, then the line profiles are generally similar to the homogeneous case. Occasionally, emission wings in the lines are produced by the temperature inversion which occurs in these atmospheres. The implications of these calculations are discussed in light of several statements in the literature that particular stars might possibly be layered. The present calculations do not encourage these possibilities. In one case (HZ 21), the calculations strongly suggest that this hybrid white dwarf star, showing spectral features of both H and He, is reasonably well mixed.
