The stellar content of the two prototype (super) giant H II regions 30 Doradus and NGC 3603 is discussed on the basis of new (1) narrow- and wide-band CCD images of their central 3'×5' and (2) moderate resolution IDS spectroscopy of the central luminous object R 136 = HD 38268 and other resolved Wolf-Rayet (W-R) stars in 30 Dor, and of the central luminous object HD 97950 in NGC 3603. It is found that both H II regions contain probably isothermal clusters of luminous O and W-R stars. Neither for R 136 a in 30 Dor nor for HD 97950 in NGC 3603 is it necessary to postulate a single star of extraordinarily high mass or luminosity. The authors deduce that R 136 a contains ≡4 - 5 WN stars, while HD 97950 contains ≡2 - 3 WN stars. In 30 Dor and NGC 3603 the overall number ratio of W-R/O stars is ≡0.05, i.e., normal compared to other regions in the Galaxy and the LMC.
