The giant elliptical M84 in the Virgo cluster has been observed. By CCD technique a lane of dust and ionized gas crossing the center perpendicular to the radio axis is studied. IDS spectra of the ionized gas resemble those of low ionization nuclear emission-line regions known from several other galaxies. The lane may be the result of gas cooling out of the X-ray corona which fills up the galaxy, but the estimated rate is too low to account for the optical line emission, and the high velocity dispersion 350 km s-1 is larger than expected from shocks following rapid cooling. The observed kinematics of the ionized gas also disagree with models assuming the gas to move in anomalous, trapped orbits in a rotating triaxial potential.
