The ESA photon counting detector, a photon counting system developed as a scientific model for the Faint Object Camera, has been successfully operated in commissioning runs at ground based observatories. The characteristics of the detector system, which closely resembles the flight version, are described, and the operational environment, including features specific to the scientific prototype, is summarized. Observations in direct imaging and time-resolved imaging modes are described and some examples are given of both laboratory performance tests and astronomical results.
