The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), a proposed new ground-based gamma-ray observatory, represents a dramatic step forward in the study of extreme astrophysical processes in the universe. The array will achieve an unparalleled angular resolution and background rejection with a detectable flux sensitivity 1% of the flux from the Crab Nebula at 100 GeV. One of the scientific goals of the array is the study of very high energy gamma-ray emission from shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs), thought to be the origin of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Gamma-rays in shell-type SNRs may be produced by bremsstrahlung, inverse Compton scattering and nucleonic interactions. We discuss observations of shell-type SNRs planned for VERITAS and compare the predicted sensitivity and angular resolution of the array to models of gamma-ray production in these objects.
