During the last three years the Gamma-Ray Burst field has experienced tremendous progress. The Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX afforded a breakthrough to one of the major questions regarding the distance scale of GRBs: their cosmological origin was established with the discovery in X-rays and in optical wavelengths of the first GRB counterpart in a distant galaxy. Subsequent observations confirmed these results and supplied a collection of counterparts with diverse properties, creating new questions. Current efforts in GRB research are focused on establishing the GRB luminosity function, the relation between bursters and the star formation rate, the relation between GRBs and supernovae, the origin of the GRB central engine and the multi-wavelength emission mechanisms. I will review here recent results addressing these issues.
