Possible Soviet efforts concerning the exploration of the planets Venus and Mars by spacecraft are considered. It is expected that two or at most three Veneras will be sent to Venus. Each Venera will probably send a lander to make a parachute descent to the surface. The mother spacecraft will enter elliptical orbits around Venus. Exploration of the Venus atmosphere by balloons is planned for the period from 1980 to 1985. Differences in the Soviet and the American approaches for studying Mars by lander and orbiter are discussed, giving attention to differences in trajectories and spacecraft weight.
