A physical and dynamical theory is presented for the mean differential rotation of the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter in the vicinity of the equator. The treatment discusses the swift rotation of the equatorial belt which is sharply bounded by two shear zones poleward of plus or minus 10 deg latitude. As one feature of the theory, an estimate is obtained for the depth of the Jovian tropical atmosphere, namely, about 1,000 km. A somewhat smaller value is deduced for the corresponding depth of the atmosphere of Saturn. Values computed by the method employed are denoted as Newtonian depths. In the analysis use is made of principles derived elsewhere by the writer for general purposes in the study of planetary and other rotating fluid systems.
