Recent interferometric observations of hydroxyl maser sources associated with H II regions are analyzed. The observations were made at 1612, 1665, 1667, and 1720 MHz, and the sources included W3(OH), W49, W51, W75, NGC 6334, and VY CMa. It is shown that the radiation is observed only along isolated lines of sight characterized by a specific Doppler frequency shift, a unique sense of circular polarization, and a single transition. Possibilities are considered that these characteristics may reflect variations in the pumping mechanism from place to place in a source, that they may arise from properties of the solutions of the equations of transfer and the population equations, or that they may be the consequence of a filter in the source. It is suggested that the pumping rate is uniform throughout a source and that a filter mechanism dependent on the mass velocity and magnetic field in the source region allows stimulated emission along only a few lines of sight at a few Doppler shifts with unique senses of polarization in single transitions.
