Hadriaca Patera is the only volcano on Mars with a clear positive magnetic anomaly directly over the volcanic edifice, as determined by electron reflection magnetometry. We analyze its magnetic signature in detail and compare with other Martian volcanoes, most of which show either a total absence of crustal magnetism or local magnetic minima, characteristic of thermal demagnetization of crust by intrusive magmatism or underplating. We examine Hadriaca's geophysical context: topography, crater-age of surface lava flows, gravity anomaly, position inside the Hellas rim, and past aqueous environment, and discuss possible scenarios to explain the signature we see today. The two most likely are a) pre-Hellas thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) of a deep-seated magma body beneath the volcano followed by post-Hellas intrusive partial thermal demagnetization and b) post-Hellas emplacement of the volcano and TRM of its magma chamber in a global magnetic field, which implies that a global dynamo was active after the Hellas impact.
