An attempt is made to compare modern accelerator data on cosmic rays
with data obtained in the 1940's and 1950's, and to clarify some
important aspects of multiple production which provide information on
the mechanism of this process. In addition, some cosmic ray data
obtained at ultrahigh energies are reviewed.
