According to Oort's (1950) hypothesis, the solar system is surrounded by a huge primordial swarm of some 10 to the 11th comets extending half-way to the nearest star. However, Clube and Napier (1982) have argued against such a hypothesis. The present investigation is concerned with a reexamination of a primordial cloud of solar system comets, assuming that such a comet cloud can be formed as a by-product of the formation of the sun and planets. It is concluded that the number of passages of the solar system through giant molecular clouds during its lifetime is in the range from 1 to 10, depending on the parameters. This makes survival of the loosely-bounded primordial Oort comet cloud rather unlikely for reasonable values of the parameters. Analytic results derived for the standard Oort model show that this is just one of a family of hypothetic clouds with power-law energy spectra. Observations suggest that better agreement would be provided by models with smaller q and a higher degree of central concentration.
