Analytic expressions are derived for the energy transfer between stars in a cold disc and a perturbing point mass galaxy during an encounter. The impulsive limit is re-derived and correction terms are computed for hyperbolic encounters. In the parabolic limit, the perturber is found to be almost always accelerated, except for overhead encounters where the energy transfer is small. Hence in all slow encounters where non-linear effects can be neglected the disc component will inhibit the merging of the two galaxies.
