A description is provided of a test which is useful for analyzing the one-dimensional distribution of absorbing clouds presumed to be responsible for absorption lines in QSO spectra. A particular advantage of the test is related to its applicability to inhomogeneous samples of spectra. The data from the EP80 catalog is found to be inconsistent with a nonevolving population of clouds for any reasonable value of the deceleration parameter. The total sample available for study comprises 299 spectra of 181 QSOs. It is shown that evolution is necessary in the framework of standard Friedmann cosmology. Attention is also given to an application of the technique and the available data in the case of some nonstandard cosmological models in which evolution is strictly disallowed.
