A theoretical study is conducted of the surface-brightness distribution in the head of a comet during increases, decreases, and flare-ups of cometary brightness. A surface-brightness distribution is calculated for initial velocities of 3 km/sec, acceleration due to light pressure of between 0.1 and 0.5 cm/sec per sec, and various conditions of brightness variation. The results show that the center of inertia of a comet practically coincides with the visible center of the comet's head. The necessity is noted of studying the surface-brightness distribution and spectra by advanced methods in which the exposure time does not exceed several seconds.
