Studies of the relationships between the components in this pair are reviewed. It is noted that the author (1958) had selected this pair as a prototype of galaxies with satellites that were actually located at the tip of a spiral arm. The results of Toomre and Toomre (1972) are discussed which led them to believe that the spiral arm of NGC 5194 was projected toward NGC 5195 only by chance and that the latter was located at a distance of 11 kpc beyond that arm. It is shown that NGC 5195 is a young active galaxy, is probably located above the spiral arm of NGC 5194, and partially obscures the latter. It is not a satellite, but an equal compact component with a large mass and luminosity. It is concluded that irrespective of the true geometric and dynamic picture of this pair, the term 'M 51-type galaxies' should not be discarded since about 100 of these have been discovered.
