A model for the binary system containing Her X-1 is considered in which the primary star has a sufficiently strong magnetic field so that the outflow of matter from it occurs in the form of jets. It is shown that when the neutron star is located in a jet, the optical depth for X-rays exceeds unity and the pulsar has a wide directivity pattern. In the opposite case (when the optical depth is less than unity), a pencil-beam pattern results and no emission is observable. Calculations indicate that the 35-day cycle can be explained if the pulsar revolves around the primary in 35 days and the size of a jet equals one-third of the orbital dimensions. Variability in the 35-day cycle is thought to be associated with irregular motions of the primary's magnetic poles. Some optical features of this binary system are discussed.
