The present study has been conducted to correlate multiple satellite injection signatures to the rather extensive ground magnetometer data available from the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) in an attempt to pursue further the spatial structure of substorm signatures in the magnetosphere and the mapping of low-energy injections to the ionosphere. The satellite data include 70 eV to 23 keV ion/electron measurements made by a plasma instrument aboard ATS 6 and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration magnetic field measurements from GOES II and III geosynchronous spacecraft made during the first 6 months of 1979. It is found that the synchronous orbit manifestation of substorms, i.e., plasma injection and magnetic field reconfiguration to dipolar, has an onset which expands both eastward and westward from a relatively narrow sector near midnight. The study is biased toward low to moderate geomagnetic activity.
