Theoretical and practical aspects of visual photometry of the cometary coma are reviewed. Careful analyses of magnitude data are useful for statistical purposes and for future attempts to correlate visual brightness with the production rates and abundances of various cometary species. The photometric parameters are discussed and the practical aspects of obtaining useful mv estimates are considered with a view to improving and standardizing the data.
