A condition is derived under which the motion of a system of two deformable bodies can be reduced to the two-body problem. By abandoning the absolute frame of reference and using an accelerated frame attached to the first body, the motion of the two bodies is reduced to the relative motion of the second body about the center of mass of the first without any restriction on the structure or material of the bodies. A relation is adopted which identifies this problem with the two-body one and yields the condition that the total contact force of each body of a system of two bodies moving in relative orbit is proportional to their masses. Numerical solutions are presented for several sun-planet, planet-satellite, and binary star systems.
