New photoelectric observations of RR Pic in UBV and integrated light, combined with previously published data, yield a precise value of the orbital period. Light curves and color variations as a function of orbital phase are discussed. The spectrum of RR Pic shows a strong continuum and mostly weak emission lines of H, He II and C III. A qualitative model of a close binary with an extended hot area on a gas disc surrounding the blue component is suggested. The gas disc seems to suffer a partial eclipse by the red, cool companion. This interpretation is also supported by UV photometry carried out with the OAO-2.
