There exist well-documented accounts of observations of enhanced nightglow associated with spectacular meteor shower displays. Possible mechanisms responsible for this elusive phenomenon are examined. It is shown that the observed emission is not a direct consequence of the influx of meteors on the earth but rather has its source in scattering of solar radiation by interplanetary micrometeoroids which form the dense dust clouds ejected by the parent comets of the associated meteor streams.
