It is argued that cosmic rays are essentially of galactic origin, up to the highest observed energies. Their ionic component is boosted by young binary neutron stars (grindstone effect); their electron-positron component comes mainly from young pulsars. Injection into the magnetic flux tubes of the galactic disk occurs through the heads of relativistic jets, via field-line crossing, and may be rigidity-dependent.
