Observations of the shortest-duration and narrowest-band spike-type solar radio bursts are discussed which were performed using a high-resolution spectrograph over the frequency range from 180 to 230 MHz with simultaneous detection of circular polarization at 204 MHz. It is found that the emission in the great variety of spikes observed during noise storms is generally strongly polarized, the sign of polarization is the same for spikes and type I bursts, spikes observed in groups of similar 'rain'-type bursts are characterized by predominantly positive frequency drift, the fine structure of spikes is seen as frequency and time splitting, and some spikes are observed in the form of miniature U and J bursts. These data are taken to indicate that spikes radiate near the local plasma frequency and that fast electron fluxes constitute the emission source. The results also show that the directivity of spike emission is probably higher than that of type I bursts and that a large variety of spikes often accompanies type III bursts.
