Measurements of the fluctuation of the depth of shower maximum are briefly reviewed and compared with the results of model calculations by the Durham group (Chantler et al., 1982) and by Ellsworth et al. (1982). It is shown that the hypothesis of a pure iron beam at 10 EeV can be strongly rejected in favor of one in which the proton fraction is at least 40 percent and probably higher.
