The fluctuations of the lateral muon development are analyzed in order to obtain information on the chemical nature of the primary component. Comparison with experimental results from Tien-Shan favors the mixed composition: 50 percent protons, 20 percent light nuclei, and 30 percent heavy nuclei. This determination is model-dependent and is not valid if the secondary multiplicity is large (sq rt E). Furthermore, it appears that reliable predictions are not sensitive enough to the details of the composition to permit discrimination among models which differ only by small variations in composition. This would remain true even if the experimental uncertainties were reduced.
