Data on two observed hard-X-ray outbursts from Aql X-1 are analyzed. The hard X-ray spectrum of the source is examined, the shape of this spectrum is discussed, and evidence is presented which indicates that the first transient even in Aql X-1 may have been observed as early as April 1966. The distance to Aql X-1 is estimated to be less than 4 to 6 kpc. Two models are considered for Aql X-1, the first involving a binary system with a neutron star in a highly eccentric orbit about a normal companion and the second involving a triple system in which two normal stars form a long-period binary and have a discrete plasma bridge cyclically traversed by the X-ray source.
