The deceleration of a fast charged particle in a dense stellar plasma is considered for the protons and alpha-particles produced in the following carbon- and oxygen-burning reactions: C-12 plus C-12 yields Na-23 plus a proton, C-12 plus C-12 yields Na-20 plus an alpha-particle, O-16 plus O-16 yields P-31 plus a proton, and O-16 plus O-16 yields Si-28 plus an alpha-particle. The effectiveness of protons and electrons in decelerating fast protons and alpha-particles is evaluated. It is shown that protons and alpha-particles have a high probability of undergoing nuclear capture before being thermalized in the case of oxygen burning.
