Impressive recurrent bursts of 40-190 keV X-rays from objects in the local galaxy, detected by Soviet satellite Kosmos-428 (June 1971) and subsequently by satellites SAS-3 and OSO-8, are discussed, as among the 'most intriguing mysteries' in current astrophysics. Spectra of the Rapid Burster MXB 19 1730-335 are displayed, and a sky distribution chart of 25 X-ray burst sources and (for correlation) globular clusters is shown. Data are provided on some of the 150-odd known persistent galactic X-ray burst sources: MXB 1742-29, MXB 1743-28, MXB 1743-29, MXB 1659-29, MXB 1837+05, Serpens X-1, MXB 1730-335. Possible identity of Serpens X-1 and MXB 1837+05 is considered.
