Meteoroid Showers, Zodiacal Light, Light Scattering, Mass Distribution
Scientific paper
Factors upon which the width of a meteoroid stream depends are identified. The widths of the major streams observed by radio techniques are given, and observations of enhancements in the zodiacal light are discussed. Based on stream-width data alone, it is concluded that the observed enhancements in the zodiacal light are produced by scattering from particles with masses of 1 millionth to 3 ten-thousandths g and sizes in the range from 0.01 to 0.09 cm. The mean mass and size are estimated to be 3 hundred-thousandths g and 0.04 cm, respectively. It is noted that the enhancements might have a size and a mass distribution that differ from those of the smooth zodiacal cloud responsible for the general zodiacal light.
