Astronomical phenomena associated with the accretion of matter onto stars and galaxies are surveyed. The standard disk model from plasma physics is introduced and its modification by X-ray irradiation is discussed. Properties of the accretion disk formed around neutron stars are found from observations of the absorption of X-rays by the accretion disk, radiation emitted from the disk, and the change of the spin periods of X-ray pulsars. The standard model is constructed for the stationary disk, while nonstationary disks can be responsible for transient phenomena including X-ray and gamma-ray bursts.
