The general theory of particle acceleration is illustrated by three particular types of acceleration. These are Fermi acceleration, acceleration by strong electromagnetic waves such as those assumed to be produced by pulsars, and acceleration by collisionless shocks. The physical processes involved as well as the amount of acceleration produced in each case are discussed. Fermi acceleration is entirely stochastic. Pulsar acceleration is entirely coherent. Shock acceleration is a mixture of the two in which stochastic acceleration is organized by the shock in such a way as to yield a good power spectrum.
