The occurrence of modulational instabilities in an isotropic, unmagnetized plasma is discussed and an extension of the theory to magnetized plasmas is considered. The basic equations were derived, following a two fluid description of the plasma. Application to the theory of type 1 solar bursts is proposed. Type 3 solar bursts, auroral kilometric radiation, and pulsar radiation are also dealt with. Galactic density waves are another manifestation of modulational instabilities in astrophysics.
