Pioneer and Venera project achievements are summarized. The Venera spacecraft obtained temperature and pressure profiles down to the surface and measured the atmospheric bulk composition (CO2 96%, N2 4%). They took the first photographs of the surface showing rocks. They analyzed the surface, using a gamma ray spectrometer, and observed lightning. Mariner 10 took UV pictures of cloud cover, confirming the general 4 days rotation originally inferred from ground based observations. The surface was mapped by a radar altimeter.
