Mrk 335 is found to be a variable Seyfert 1 galaxy whose continuum, emission lines and 3000-A bump have varied over a two-year period (1974 to 1976). While these observations seem consistent with the existence of some optical depth in the lower-series Balmer lines, they may also indicate that the Balmer continuum is optically thin, to account for the Balmer line variations and the 3000-A bump. Additional contributions to the bump may come from the Bowen resonance-fluorescence O III lines.
