Accurate and homogeneous positions are presented for the optical counterparts of 39 extragalactic radio sources south of + 5 deg declination to be used for the establishment of a reference frame for high-precision space astrometry. The positions of the optical counterparts, which are found mainly in the Southern Hemisphere, were measured relative to reference stars from the Perth 70 Catalog on ESO (B) Atlas (Schmidt) plates and POSS Atlas plates. Internal accuracies at the 0.2 arcsec level are noted in both coordinates. The optical positions obtained are compared with the optical positions derived by Argue and Sullivan, and the radio interferometric positions derived by the JPL.
