The spectra of bright northern supernova remnants have been obtained in the range 8500-11,000 A with a dispersion of 230 A/mm using a grating spectrograph attached to the Cassegrain focus of a 1.93 m telescope. The spectra reveal the presence of forbidden S II, S III, and C I lines and He I lines. Comparison with shock-ionization models suggests a carbon deficiency of about two with respect to cosmic values for the Cygnus Loop and at least 150 for the fast moving knots in Cas A, which is in good agreement with previous independent determinations.
