It is pointed out that active and passive background shielding will be employed, and by applying the dE/dx vs E technique, particles of different species, among them electrons, protons, alpha-particles and pick-up ions of cometary origin, can be detected over a wide spectrum of energies (from approximately 20 keV to the MeV range). Three-dimensional viewing of particle pitch angle distributions will be achieved by mounting two of the telescopes at 137 deg and the other at 45 deg to the spin axis. Low-energy protons are separated from electrons by means of two identical telescopes, one with and one without foil. The particle detector instrument can operate in two modes, namely a real-time mode and a cruise phase, or storage mode. With the real time mode, observations made at high spatial and temporal resolution in the cometary environment will make possible studies of particles accelerated at the bow shock and/or in the tail of the comet.
