Measurements of the ion composition of plasma in the inner magnetosphere during the magnetic storm of February 21-22, 1979, are discussed. It is shown that during this period oxygen was the principal ion component in the dayside magnetosphere out to the magnetopause and in part of the nightside magnetosphere. The observed composition of magnetospheric plasma can be explained only by assuming a direct injection of O(+) ions from the ionosphere.
