Longitude-velocity plane antenna temperature maps obtained from 1.3-cm wavelength observations of the (1, 1), (2, 2), and (3, 3) inversion lines of NH3 have been used to construct line intensity ratio maps, and an analytical expression has been derived which relates the gas kinetic temperature to the line ratios under the assumption of large opacity in the inversion lines. It is suggested that line ratio maps can be used to derive an approximate kinetic temperature for the molecular gas, independent of opacity assumptions. Heating mechanism that might account for the relatively high and uniform temperatures implied are examined, although the present data do not permit a determination of the dominant mechanism.
