The basics of our current knowledge about the formation of massivegalaxies will be presented, jointly with some key open questions. Wewill also describe how we are trying to improve our understanding ofgalaxy formation and evolution by obtaining more robust estimations ofproperties such as the stellar mass, age of the stellar populations, and SFRs of high redshift (z=1-4) massive galaxies. In this context, we present the main results of our research about the assembly ofgalaxies at z<4 based on the data obtained by the deepest Spitzersurveys carried out with IRAC and MIPS during the cryogenicmission. Analyzing SFR and stellar mass functions in several redshift bins at 0
