Conditions on which the maximum of the flare of an active galactic nucleus in emission lines lags behind the maximum of its flare in the continuum are deduced under the assumption of isotropic distribution of line-emitting matter around the central source of ionizing radiation. In particular, these conditions constrain the allowed radial (in relation to the central source) distributions of line-emitting matter; thus they may be used to investigate the spatial structure of broad-line regions of active galactic nuclei. Applications to NGC 4151 and other Seyfert galaxies are discussed.
