Electron temperature measurements performed by the EXOS-A satellite in the night-time topside F-region above the South American magnetic field anomaly are reported. It is shown that out of a total of 29 observed cases of electron temperature enhancement, 23 occurred above the South American anomaly near a low magnetic field and at a magnetic field inclination of -20 degrees. The peak electron temperature was recorded at altitudes between 650 and 900 km between the minimal magnetic field and the minimum satellite altitude. No correlation was found between magnetic disturbances and the occurrence of anomalous electron temperature. Electron temperature increases of more than 1000 K were detected above the night-time topside F-region. Simultaneously enhanced wave emissions were found at frequencies of 45 kHz, 2 MHz, and 3 MHz. The theoretical principles used in the design of the electron temperature probe are discussed in an appendix.
