Near-Earth Objects: Surveys
Scientific paper
The Wise Observatory Parallel NEOs project (WOPNEOs) was a unique program in which fields, routinely imaged for a deep-sky scientific project, were re-used in order to locate minor planets, discovered serendipitously on the images, then their positions were measured and reported to the Minor Planets Centre (MPC). In the course of two years (1998-1999) we discovered 52 new asteroids and confirmed 13 others (some obtained from the MPC's NEOs Confirmation Page (NEOCP)) and one comet. One of our discoveries has been numbered and two others are pending being numbered. The rational leading to this project is described, and its uniqueness, as well as the results of two years of operation, are analysed. A comparison of the WOPNEOs project with other Near Earth Objects (NEOs) survey programs is presented. Detailed statistics of the survey's performance are presented. Assessment of the probject's significance, as well as that of other projects similar to this one, concludes this paper.
