A statistical investigation is made for estimating the total amount of main belt asteroids larger than 1 km. Starting from the well known investigation by van Houten et al. (1970), a comparison is made with the results recently obtained by ESA's Infrared Space Observatory, ISO (1996-1997). From this it seems that the asteroids in our Solar System (between Mars and Jupiter = main belt asteroids) may be more numerous than previously thought.
