Leonids, Observations, Instrumentation

Scientific paper

In 2001, ESA/ESTEC performed a comprehensive campaign for the observation of the 2001 Leonid meteor storm. The observation activities took place in the outback of Western Australia. During an observation period of 8 nights, video recordings from image-intensified video cameras and simultaneous recordings of visual range meteor spectra were performed from two locations about 50 km apart. In parallel to the video recordings, the vertical electric field in the ULF-VLF (Ultra Low Frequency to Very Low Frequency) range was measured and recorded on the audio track of the video tapes used for the camera data. In addition to the automated recordings, ZHR data was obtained from visual meteor counts. This paper describes the instrumentation and gives an overview over the obtained data.
