The scientific goals and the principles of construction applicable to large telescopes and specified by technological research in Europe and in the USA are discussed. The Very Large Telescope (VLT) project envisioned by ESO (European Southern Observatory) is based on an aperture equivalent to 16 m and its range includes spectroscopic observation of distant planets and galaxies as well as high spectral resolution observations to determine the abundance and origin of the elements found in the stars, in the Magellanic Clouds, and in other satellite galaxies. The three types of VLT considered by ESO are a single 16-m telescope with a mosaic mirror, a multimirror telescope consisting of four 8-m telescopes, and a linear array of four 8-m telescopes. The active correction of the primary mirror is a technique, developed at ESO for the 3.5 m New Technology Telescope, which reduces the weight and the cost and enables the servo system to compensate for thermal dilatation, bending, and hysteresis of the mechanical structure. A probable site for the installation of VLT is in the northern half of Chile; the site being chosen for economic reasons and also because the sky there offers exceptional observation conditions.
